The film based on Blizzard's long-running Warcraft video game franchise is certainly set on making a splash. The extraordinarily hush-hush San Diego Comic-Con trailer -- any attempts to leak it online have been firmly and rapidly quashed -- has fans frustrated. But one Comic-Con release (not the trailer, don't get your hopes up) is now viewable online.
Fans all over the world can now experience a gryphon flight over the fantasy world of Azeroth. Originally viewable in virtual reality -- with the 50,000 Google Cardboard headsets film production company Legendary was giving away at the convention -- users had to download the free app (Android | iOS), which also contained trailers for Guillermo del Toro's horror film "Crimson Peak" and a "Pacific Rim" teaser showcasing a battle between a Jaeger and a Kaiju.
The "Warcraft" teaser can now be watched on YouTube. Moreover, it can be viewed in full 360-degree glory.
To do so on the Web, you need to be using Chrome browser. Directional arrows in the top left corner of the window allow you to pan around the scene as you soar over the city of Stormwind on the back of a gryphon.
It's when you're viewing on the YouTube app on a smartphone with gyroscopes that it gets really spectacular, though. As you move the phone around, you'll physically pan around the scene. Click the spectacles icon at the bottom right and the view splits into stereoscopic mode for Cardboard (you don't actually need a headset -- just hold your phone close enough to your face to focus on the two images as one).
"Warcraft", directed by Duncan Jones, who directed sci-fi films "Moon" and "Source Code", is due in theatres in June 2016. The full trailer isn't due to be released to the public until November this year.
